The Freedom Scientific Student of the Month program features K-12 students living in the U.S. who are blind or visually impaired and use Freedom Scientific technology to achieve educational goals. The Student of the Month for January 2022 is Alexis, a ninth grader from Oregon.
Alexis started learning Braille at age three, and now primarily uses it to proofread documents and read books (she enjoys mysteries and thrillers). She began using JAWS in the first grade and the Focus Blue Braille Display in the sixth grade. Alexis uses this technology mostly in the classroom when conducting research and completing assignments.
In her spare time, Alexis enjoys family trips to the mountains, camping, riding her four-wheeler, and bicycling. She plays the trumpet in her school band, sings, and plays piano.
Alexis says she enjoys using Freedom Scientific products because of the independence they provide. “I feel very happy that you make multiple devices for blind people so they are not left out of activities in school. They can do the same activities as sighted people.”
When asked if she has advice for other individuals her age who are blind or visually impaired, Alexis says she would recommend using Freedom Scientific products. “I feel any blind or visually impaired students and adults would find these products very useful for navigating the computer and for use in life in general.”
