Q&A with James
How long have you been with Vispero?
James: I first started with Vispero in 2006.
What was your title/role when you started, and what is it now?
J: I started as a warehouse assistant, working part-time while studying computer science and electronics at university. My current position is Sales and Marketing Manager for the UK.
What initially drew you to your field, and how has that passion evolved over time?
J: Working part-time in my first position made me realize how much of an impact Vispero (then Enhanced Vision) had on those living with sight loss. Over time, my role has evolved from understanding the technical aspects to focusing on how we can better connect with and serve our customers. A company goal—”customer first”—definitely sums up my approach.
What recent accomplishment at work has you feeling most energized?
J: I wouldn’t single out one specific accomplishment, but every time I hear, “This equipment will change my life,” it energizes and motivates me to help more people. This happens regularly in my position. Another rewarding aspect is seeing team members flourish—I’ve trained two relatively new colleagues and watching them succeed makes me proud. This is mainly fueled by coffee!
Have you ever had to learn a new skill quickly to meet project demands? How did you manage?
J: With such a varied job role, I regularly face new demands—whether it’s website design, addressing a specific customer need, or reacting to market trends. The list is endless. During the COVID period, many of us had to adapt quickly; for me, transitioning to more online content was a steep but rewarding challenge.
What are you most passionate about outside of work?
J: I have many hobbies outside of work! I love most sports and am a passionate Nottingham Forest fan (football/soccer). I enjoy the gym and running—I’ve completed several London Marathons for low-vision charities like Guide Dogs and RNIB. I also enjoy going off-grid, whether that’s climbing mountains or taking trips on my motorbike. I’ve been fortunate to travel extensively and love experiencing new places and cultures.
Do you have any hidden talents or unique hobbies? Share them with us!
J: My talents are endless… If I’m not good at something, I’ll dedicate time to improving—I’m very stubborn and competitive! DIY is one of those skills. I recently built my own garden bar/pub at the end of my garden.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
J: My list is long, but if I had to choose one place, it would be Patagonia, Chile. The breathtaking scenery, friendly people, and incredible food make it an absolute dream destination.
What’s your favorite aspect of our company culture?
J: The sense of purpose. Every day, we make a difference in people’s lives, which is incredibly fulfilling. Plus, the collaborative spirit within the team makes it a great place to work.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
J: “Stay curious and never stop learning.” This mindset has helped me adapt and grow throughout my career. Another piece of advice I often refer back to is: “A bad decision is better than no decision.”
You have a time machine! Would you travel to the past or the future, and why?
J: Tricky question… I’d go back to the past. Nottingham Forest won the European Cup in 1979 and 1980—witnessing my team at the height of success would be incredible!
From a professional perspective, I’d also implement what we do today much earlier. I often hear people say, “Why didn’t anybody tell me about this before?” or “I wish I had this when I was in education.”
I can’t lie—I’d probably check the lottery numbers too! 😉
James likes adventure. What kind of motorcycle?
