Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over the age of 40. They are also the principal cause of blindness in the world. Fifty percent of all Americans will develop cataracts by the age of 80.
What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens and usually progresses slowly. If left untreated, cataracts may result in blindness. An annual eye exam with your eye care professional can help identify the cataract early and allow for treatment.

Protect Your Vision
Though there is no proven way to prevent cataracts. Healthy living, wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays and not smoking will help you reduce your risk of developing cataracts.
In the early stage of cataracts, when your vision begins to change, you may be able to use handheld magnifiers, filter lenses to heighten contrast or improved lighting to help with everyday activities.
A decline in your vision does not mean you need to stop participating in your favorite activities. I was born with cataracts. Back then, there was not much that could be done for individuals born with cataracts. Thus, my twin sister and I are legally blind. Fortunately we have some site. From somebody who has never been able to experience 2020, I would suggest talking to your doctor if you feel you have any of these symptoms.
